Our speaker this month
Joel Rubin is the Chief Executive Officer of the Rubin Communications Group and the Chairman of the Board for the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame (VSHOF).
Since 1991 the Rubin Communications Group has helped companies and nonprofits establish or expand their brands in southeastern Virginia. The Group provides expertise in content marketing, media relations, video production, social media, community relations, and graphic design.
Prior to establishing the Rubin Communications Group Joel had a lengthy and impressive career in local media, including 15 award-winning years as a news, sports, and features reporter with WAVY-TV and nearly 17 years as host of the weekly Sunday morning political talk show on WVEC-TV, "On the Record with Joel Rubin."
A native of Richmond and 1975 graduate of the University of Virginia, Joel has devoted years of volunteer service to a wide variety of organizations and causes. He has earned professional accreditation in public and media relations, and he is an expert in pitching news stories, brainstorming community service programs, crafting messages, and encouraging executives and political figures to address regional challenges. Joel is also considered one of the area’s top emcees and facilitators. In 2009 he was elected to the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame; and in 2013 the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America honored Joel as its PR Practitioner of the Year.
As the Chairman of the Board Joel has been a driving force behind the relocation of the VSHOF from its building in downtown Portsmouth to Virginia Beach where new exhibits will become a permanent part of Town Center. A new concept, “Walk the Hall,” will feature self-guided tours of the exhibits through a mobile app. Work on the design of the displays and locations in and around Town Center is nearing completion and the plan is to open early in 2018.
The first event of the year will be ...#HoosOnFirst, an evening with three former University of Virginia Baseball standouts: Ryan Zimmerman, Mark Reynolds, and Chris Taylor. This unique event is scheduled for Monday, February 5th at the Virginia Beach Funny Bone.
