Our speaker this month
Retired Surface Warfare Officer Dennis Popiela ‘78 has been an emergency medical technician (EMT) for the Virginia Beach EMS System for nine years. In addition to leadership positions within the Ocean Park Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad and Virginia Beach Rescue Council, he achieved certification as a national registry paramedic (NRP) with certifications to practice in Virginia and Florida. He has extensive experience in pre-hospital emergency medicine, pediatric and adult advanced life support, and mass casualty incident (MCI) response.
Pre-hospital emergency medical care is receiving increasingly greater emphasis as the US population ages and the overall health of the population decreases. Dennis will discuss some of the more common medical emergencies, how to recognize them, and what the life threats are.
This talk will also focus on those lifestyle changes that can reduce the likelihood of experiencing a medical emergency as well as the precautions and steps you can take at home to make it easier for first responders to access, treat and transport our loved ones.
This topic is applicable to those who are at an age where medical emergencies are more common, for those who have aged parents who need care, and for parents with children who experience medical emergencies.
