Register now for an exclusive reception at the Mariners Museum to celebrate the opening of the exhibition Answering America’s Call: Newport News in World War I.
The exhibition will commemorate the 100th anniversary of America’s involvement in the “war to end all wars.” For more information go to: www.marinersmuseum.org/answering-americas-call.
Rare objects with a story
Guests will have a rare opportunity to interact with museum staff and hear the stories behind one-of-a-kind objects in the museum’s collection. These objects include a 9th century Viking sword, an astounding painting of the German ocean liner SS Kaiser Wilhelm II, an early 20th century Marconi radio, or a late 19th century despatch box by the famous luxury products company Asprey of London.
Go behind the scenes
A limited number of attendees will also have the opportunity to go behind the scenes to the collections with the Director of Collections Management and library storage areas with the museum librarian where unique items will be highlighted. Guests can also witness conservation in action as they tour the Batten Conservation Complex, which houses 210 tons of artifacts from the USS Monitor, including the turret and cannons. Each of these tours will be conducted three times during the evening with small groups of pre-registered guests; details on how to sign up will be sent to event registrants.
Complimentary hors d'oeuvres are included and a cash bar will be available. With the support of multiple sponsors, tickets for this event are only $10 if you register using the link below, less than the discounted military or senior admission to the museum. Guests who are not pre-registered will pay $15 at the door.
