Our speaker this month is Adam Winkler, Sports Director for the local CBS affiliate WTKR-TV Channel 3. Adam will join us to share his experiences as a veteran sportscaster and news reporter. He is a graduate of Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas where he played baseball for four years on a team that twice advanced to the Division III championship game.
Adam began his tenure as New 3’s Sports Director in July 2016 after six EMMY Award-winning years as the Sports Anchor at KEYE-TV in Austin, Texas. After his first year with WTKR Adam was voted Best Local Sportscaster by the Hampton Roads Sports Commission and recognized by the Virginia Association of Broadcasters with the award for Best Sports Coverage. Throughout his career Adam’s award-winning coverage has featured such events as the College Baseball World Series, competitive tree climbers, several Super Bowls and Final Fours, and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Prior to his arrival WTKR had not featured a Sports Department for several years; but under his direction it was relaunched with a focus on local sports and athletes from the Hampton Roads area. In fact, some Hampton Roads Chapter members will remember several days before the 2018 Army-Navy game Adam conducted an on-air interview with former Navy football players and Chapter members Tom Paulk ’80, Shalimar Brazier ’04, and LaVaughn Kelley ’05; and he also sent WTKR Sports Reporter Mitch Brown to our Army-Navy Party for what resulted in some excellent TV video coverage for our Chapter.
