USNAAA HRC families and friends will gather Saturday 20 April for a guided walk along a portion of the ever-expanding Elizabeth River Trail. So mark your calendar and bring your children for a family-friendly event sure to please.
We’ll meet in the parking lot of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church at the corner of Saint Paul’s Boulevard and East City Hall Avenue, adjacent the MacArthur Mall in downtown Norfolk. The entrance to the parking lot is from City Hall Avenue.
One of only four original structures still standing following the 1776 British bombardment, a cannonball remains embedded in the southwest corner of the chapel.
The walk will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a brief tour of the historic church yard and sanctuary hosted by docent Robert Deegan ‘57. It was here that the funeral service for General Douglas MacArthur was conducted on 11 April 1964. A West Point contingent escorted his body to its final resting place one block east. Elizabeth River Trail proponent and activist, Drew Ungvarsky, son of Captain Bill Ungvarsky, USN (Ret) ’73, will serve as our guide. He will take us from Saint Paul’s to the Chelsea section of Norfolk and back, about 2 ½ miles each way with educational stops and photo ops along the way.
