Our speaker this month
"Welcome to beautiful Harbor Park, home of the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles!" With those words in his very distinctive voice well-known local sports figure Jack Ankerson greets baseball fans 70 times every summer. A native of Neenah, Wisconsin, Jack attended Ripon College where he starred in football, basketball, and tennis.
In 1964 he was drafted as a quarterback in the 16th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. After a brief NFL career he transitioned to the Front Office of the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association (ABA). In 1974 as General Manager of the San Antonio Spurs, the Sporting News named him the ABA Executive of the Year.
In May 1974 he was hired as the General Manager of the Virginia Squires squad here in Norfolk that unfortunately finished with a league-worst 15-69 record. Jack also served as Head Coach for two games that year, winning one and losing one.
Jack next worked for several years as the Sports and Program Director at WTAR radio in Norfolk; and in 1995 he joined the Norfolk Tides, then the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, as the team's Director of Broadcasting and Sales. Today he remains in the Tides' employ as the team's public address announcer.
Since February 2000 Jack has served as the Executive Director of the Hampton Roads Commission in Virginia Beach; and as the public address announcer for Old Dominion University football, baseball, and men's and women's basketball, he is also the "Voice of the Monarchs."
In 2010 he was elected to the Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame. He is also on several Boards of Directors, including Festevents, and VisitNorfolk; and he is the current President of the Norfolk Sports Club.
Jack is the father of two grown daughters that live in the area, one of which is married to a naval officer; and he is the grandfather of six busy children.
